MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Vernon Wells hit two of four home runs by the Toronto Blue Jays, who earned their first win of the season and spoiled the Minnesota Twins' home opener with a 7-2 triumph.

Wells followed Frank Catalanotto's home run in the sixth inning with his first homer, then hit a three-run blast in the seventh to make it 7-1.

Wells' second homer came off wily righthander Tony Fiore, a 31-year-old in his second full season in the majors who relies on an assortment of breaking pitches.

"Fiore throws that Nintendo pitch at you, and you have to keep it in the back of your mind," Wells said.

Wells, who drove in 100 runs last season, has eight RBI in four games.

Josh Phelps also homered for the Blue Jays, who never led in a three-game season-opening sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees.

Rick Reed (0-1), who surrendered 26 homers last season, gave up Toronto's first three among four runs and six hits in six innings.

"I thought I hung a curveball (to Catalanotto)," Reed said. "But it just stayed in the middle. It was a tough way to find out that's his strength."

Doug Mientkiewicz hit his first homer of the season for Minnesota, which was looking for its first 4-0 start since 1987, when it went on to win the World Series.

Blue Jays starter Tanyon Sturtze (1-0) allowed two runs - one earned - and four hits in 6 2/3 innings before turning it over to Doug Creek and Jeff Tam, who allowed one hit.

"Sturtze had ridiculous movement on his fastball," Mientkiewicz said. "But we were too aggressive tonight and that can be the downfall of our team. We didn't force him to really throw strikes for the first four innings. We've gotta be more selective."

Sturtze won in his first start with the Blue Jays. Last season, with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, he did not get his first win until June 26, after he had already suffered eight losses. Sturtze finished last season with a 4-18 record.

"It's refreshing to get a win out of the way early," Sturtze said. "And it's always good when you get pitches working. My fastball had good movement and I was able to use my cutter and sinker."

With the win, the Blue Jays avoided their first 0-4 start in franchise history.
