Texas Rangers at Anaheim Angels

Recap | Boxscore

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Texas Rangers conclude their first season under manager Buck Showalter as they face the Anaheim Angels in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

Showalter, who previously managed the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks, will finish with a losing record for the third time. He was 76-86 with New York in 1992 and 65-97 with Arizona in 1998.

The Rangers are concluding their fourth straight losing season and need a win to avoid matching last season's loss total of 91.

Texas evened the series with Saturday's 12-3 victory as rookie Gerald Laird hit his first career home run as Rafael Palmeirio collected four RBI.

Anaheim will finish with a losing record for the second time in manager Mike Scioscia's four-year tenure. The Angels lost 87 games in 2001 before winning the World Series last season.

Chone Figgins and Scott Speizio each had a pair of hits and drove in a run for Anaheim, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Texas, which has had the worst pitching staff in the majors for most of the season, starts John Thomson (13-13, 4.84 ERA). Signed as a free agent, Thomson leads the team in wins and losses.

Thomson has won nine of his last 13 decisions and is trying to become Texas' third starter to finish with a winning record.

Thomson is 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA in four career starts against the Angels.

Anaheim hands the ball to Scot Shields (4-6, 2.93), who is 0-2 in his last four starts. He is 3-6 with a 4.14 ERA as a starter.

Shields allowed three hits in eight scoreless innings Tuesday but did not earn a decision in a 2-1, 11-inning win over Seattle.

The righthander, a 38th-round pick of Anaheim in 1997, is 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA in eight relief appearances against the Rangers.
