SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Mark Mulder looks to play the role of stopper for the Oakland Athletics on Monday night when they try to end a four-game losing streak in the opener of a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners.

Mulder (1-0, 6.55 ERA) was the winning pitcher in Oakland's last victory, a 13-5 rout at Texas last Wednesday. He won despite lasting only five innings and allowing four runs and nine hits.

The 25-year-old lefthander faced Seattle in his his first start and did not fare well even though he failed to receive a decision in a 7-6 loss on April 3. Mulder allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings and issued four walks.

Mulder is making his fourth career start at Safeco Field, where he is 1-2 with a 6.11 ERA.

Oakland saw its vaunted pitching staff struggle over the weekend in yielding 26 runs as it was swept in a three-game series at Anaheim. The starters for the Athletics, considered to be the backbone of the team, combined to allow 19 runs and 24 hits in 16 innings.

The offense was lacking as well in Sunday's 8-2 loss and Oakland managed its only runs on Terrence Long's two-run homer in the second inning. The Athletics had just five hits.

Oakland won two of three from Seattle in the first series of the season.

The Mariners have won two straight after Sunday's 4-3 victory in 13 innings over Texas in the rubber game of a three-game series. Bret Boone hit his second homer of the game with two outs in the bottom of the 13th.

Boone has five hits and three homers in his last two games. He notched his 15th career multi-homer game.

Joel Pineiro (0-1, 4.85) makes his third start of the season and second against Oakland. Pineiro opposed Mulder and Oakland on April 3 and did not receive a decision after surrendering three runs and five hits in six innings.

In his last start, Pineiro lost to Anaheim last Wednesday after allowing four runs and five hits in seven innings. The 24-year-old righthander is 2-1 lifetime against the A's.

Seattle won six of 10 meetings at home with Oakland a year ago.
