Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox
2:05 pm

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox become the last American League team to play their home opener as they open a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles Friday afternoon.

Boston is starting a 10-game homestand against divisional opponents after splitting 10 games through Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Toronto.

The Red Sox concluded their road trip with Thursday's 8-7 win at Toronto. Johnny Damon homered twice and drove in three runs and Trot Nixon also had three hits, including a two-run homer in the ninth inning.

Starting for Boston is Pedro Martinez (0-0, 0.60 ERA), who is starting his second straight home opener. He was tagged in the home opener last season for eight runs and nine hits in three innings of a 12-11 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

So far, Martinez has allowed one earned run and seven hits in 15 innings. But in both outings, Boston's bullpen has cost him. In Saturday's 2-1 loss at Baltimore, he gave up just one run and four hits in eight innings before Chad Fox issued a bases-loaded walk to Tony Batista in the ninth. Fox also surrendered a game-winning homer to Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford in Martinez's first start.

Martinez is 7-1 with in 11 career appearances, including 10 starts, against the Orioles. He has allowed just 16 earned runs in 71 1/3 innings, while striking out 77.

Baltimore salvaged the finale of its three-game set in Tampa Bay with Thursday's 4-3 win. Sidney Ponson threw seven solid innings and David Segui had an RBI single in the eighth inning.

Starting for the Orioles is Jason Johnson (0-0, 0.00), who made his final two starts of 2002 against Boston, going 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA.

Johnson opposed Martinez last Saturday and gave up just one hit in 6 1/3 innings. He is 2-4 lifetime against Boston.
