Barry Zito (NR) became Oakland's third different 20-game winner in as many seasons and captured the American League Cy Young award last season. He went 23-5 for an .821 winning percentage to break the team record previously set by Bob Welch in 1990, and he comes into 2003 with a career 47-17 record. Zito led the AL in starts (35), was third in ERA and tied for third in strikeouts (182). The 24-year-old lefthander also ranked second in the league with nine home wins and had a 16-game home winning streak snapped on August 2. Against the Mariners, Zito owns a 4-1 record in seven games. However, he allowed 13 earned runs and 26 hits against Seattle in four starts last season. Seattle counters with veteran Jamie Moyer (NR), who was 13-8 in 34 starts last season. He also posted a 3.32 ERA - his lowest since 1996, his first season with the Mariners. Moyer is 14-9 with a 3.95 ERA in 33 career appearances against the Athletics, including 29 starts. He was 2-2 with a 1.71 ERA in four starts against Oakland last season. The Athletics opened their season with a 5-0 victory over the Mariners on Tuesday. Erubiel Durazo homered, doubled and drove in five runs and Tim Hudson and Ricardo Rincon combined the shutout for Oakland.
